Promote Early Prevention and Better Management of Diabetes Complications

Overall goal: Promote early identification and improve quality of care of patients living with diabetes

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Develop National Diabetes Registry in Georgia.
  • Provide practical assistance to patients with diabetic retinopathy living in 6 regions of Georgia, in order to reduce the number of patients with partial and full vision loss through prevention, early detection, qualified treatment and awareness raising.
  • Train ophthalmologists, endocrinologists and GPs in modern approaches to diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
  • Strengthen organizational capacity of diabetes patient organizations/ patient support groups in targeted areas to achieve their long-term sustainability (improve their technical, advocacy, fundraising skills, and organizational resources).
  • Conduct 30 advocacy & media campaigns aimed at early prevention and better management of diabetic complications as well as raising public awareness on these issues.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Studying international experiences on national diabetes registries worldwide.
  • Working meetings for developing design/standards of NDR.
  • Hiring technical experts for developing NDR.
  • NDR Presentation Meeting.
  • Establish 10 diabetic eye rooms in 6 regions of Georgia and National Centre for Diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy.
  • Purchasing and equipping of mobile eye unit for diabetes eye screening in regions.
  • Operation of mobile eye unit in remote areas.
  • Developing educational and informational materials for ophthalmologists, PHC personnel and people living with diabetes.
  • Preparation of trainers.
  • Training of PHC personnel in rural regions of Georgia.
  • Technical/Management/Advocacy/Fundraising trainings for DPOs/PSGs in each project targeted location.
  • Community (patients and their family members, all interested community members) awareness raising activities on diabetes and diabetes retinopathy.
  • Annual mass screening/awareness raising events in all targeted regions.
  • Media campaign on diabetes prevention and healthy life-style.
  • Research studies to identify major issues in access to quality diabetes care services.
  • Bilateral & Working meetings with policy-makers/key opinion leaders.
  • International Conferences with participation of all stakeholders.
