Fighting Blindness in Underserved Population of Georgia
The goal of the present project is to contribute to improvement of ophthalmological service delivery to the poor and underserved communities in Tbilisi, Bolnisi and Dmanisi districts of Kvemo Kartli Region of Georgia, provide the required assistance to the blind and low vision population. The project focuses mainly on timely detection, diagnosis and management of patients with cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The project covers several directions:
OUR GOAL
Screening, diagnosing and treatment (medicinal and surgical) of the target population;
Increasing awareness and knowledge of the population about the preventable risk-factors of blindness well as recognition the danger signs prompting immediate referral to the doctor;
Training the last year students and interns of the Chair of Ophthalmology of Tbilisi State Medical University to actively involve them into the project activities as volunteers.

The project is being implemented through the LIONs International Equipped “LIONs Clinic” in Tbilisi. The following activities are planned within the framework of this project:
Screening and treatment of the target population;
Organization and conduction of: “LIONs for Better Knowledge of Diabetic Retinopathy;” LIONs for Better Knowledge Glaucoma,” LIONs for Better Knowledge Cataract” and LIONs for Better Knowledge of Uncorrected Refractive Errors” events.

Screening children with diabetes together with the representatives of local health care professionals;
Distribution of educational materials among the target population to increase their knowledge and awareness about cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy;
Organization meetings at the schools to discuss the issues of eye hygiene and the ways to take care of maintaining good vision.
The project is closely cooperating with the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, National CDC and The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, leading endocrinology and ophthalmological facilities, media and target population.
